POINT OF INTEREST

Ulupalakua Ranch

14779 Piilani Highway, Kula, Maui, Hawaii

On the southwestern slopes of Haleakala volcano on Maui, Ulupalakua is the second-largest ranch on Maui, where thousands of brood cows graze. More than 11,000 acres (4,450 hectares) have been preserved as a working ranch and wildlife habitat, and the site is also home to a restaurant, store, and Maui’s only winery.

Founded in 1845, the ranch stretches from the ocean to around 6,000 feet (1,830 meters) in elevation, with the restaurant, store, and winery at around 2,000 feet (610 meters). Visitors come here for the sweeping views, or to enjoy a meal at the Ulupalakua Ranch Store & Grill, with burgers made from beef, lamb, and elk from the ranch or locally sourced. MauiWine, which offers tastings of locally grown and produced wine, is also a popular reason for visit.

  • Ulupalakua is a working ranch and visitors should be respectful of operations.

  • All of the seating at the Ranch Store & Grill is outdoors.

  • The Ranch Store also offers items for purchase online.

  • Reservations are strongly recommended for tastings at MauiWine.

It's easiest to get to Ulupalakua Ranch by car. From central Maui, take the Hana Highway (Route 36) to the Haleakala Highway (Route 37). The ranch is located near the town of Keokea. From Hana, the ranch is located on the back road. You can also take a tour that includes transportation and a stop at the ranch.

The Ranch Store is open from Tuesday to Sunday from morning to the end of the business day, while the Grill is open from late morning to late afternoon, with closures for major holidays such as Christmas and New Year’s Day. MauiWine is open for tastings from Tuesday to Sunday from late morning to the start of the evening, with special private tastings on Tuesdays and Fridays.

Formerly the Tedeschi Vineyards, Maui’s only winery rebranded as MauiWine in 2015. Regular tastings and special private tastings that cover the winery’s history are available, and guests with reservations can also walk around the estate on their own with a self-guided map. Along with the winery’s still wines, you can taste a sparkling wine made from Maui pineapples.
