POINT OF INTEREST

Uetliberg

Stallikon, DEU

This 870-meter (2850 foot mountain southeast of central Zurich offers tourists and locals a relaxing break from the hustle and bustle of the city. Known for its striking Alpine panoramas, seasonal sports trails, and mountain-top restaurant, easy-to-access Uetliberg remains a must-visit on any Zurich itinerary.

Uetliberg’s hiking trails offer options for all ability levels, from the stroller-friendly Planet Trail to more challenging Alpine ridge routes. Some guided packages combine an Uetliberg hike along with city sightseeing or a lake cruise. Other active options include paragliding, mountain biking, or even tobogganing in winter. Visitors who prefer to take things a bit more slowly can sip a coffee on the Uto Kulm terrace or soak up views from the summit’s observation tower.

  • Many of Uetliberg’s main paths are stroller- and wheelchair-accessible.
  • Level access to the Uetliberg train is available at Uetliberg Station, Zürich Triemli, and with staff support at Zurich HB.
  • Bring cash for the bathrooms at the summit and upper tower levels.
  • There is a small children’s playground located next to Uetliberg Station.

Europe’s steepest standard railway line—the S10—connects directly to Uetliberg from Zurich’s main station, departing every 30 minutes and taking around 20 minutes. The mountain itself is car-free, so drivers should park in one of the lots near the lower S10 train stations. Uetliberg Station is located around 1640 feet (500 meters) from the summit.

Honeymooners should aim to arrive in the late afternoon, as the sunset views from the summit are famously romantic. In summer, the area is particularly popular for extreme sports, hiking, and biking. Once the snows of winter have fallen, hiking routes are often transformed into tobogganing trails, ideal for family fun.

A few kilometers south of Uetliberg, the Felsenegg summit offers plenty more in the way of active exploration. The family-friendly Planet Trail guides hikers of any age or ability on a journey to Felsenegg, keeping little ones engaged with cosmic facts and figures displayed along the way.
