UCC Coffee Museum

6 Chome-6-2 Minatojima Nakamach, Chuo, Kobe, Hyogo

Most visitors to Japan have likely tried some coffee from the Ueshima Coffee Company (UCC), renowned for having introduced the world’s first canned coffee. At the UCC Coffee Museum, you can immerse yourself in coffee culture, learn about how coffee is made, and experience it with all five senses.

The museum, laid out in a spiral shape that guides you through the history of coffee, is designed so that you can experience the full process of coffee production from beginning to end. In the Tasting Corner, compare the flavors and aromas of different coffee beans (usually two different types). The theme of these coffee beans changes every month, so if you come back the following month, you will not be tasting the same coffee beans.

After exploring the entire museum, you can take a quiz to find out how much your learned in the museum and get a Coffee Doctor certificate from the UCC Museum with your photo on it.

  • The UCC Coffee Museum is a must-visit for coffee enthusiasts and those with an interest in Japanese culture.

  • The museum provides a free audio guide, which you can download onto your phone.

  • There is free Wi-Fi throughout the museum.

  • The museum is wheelchair-accessible and has wheelchairs available for loan.

  • There are refundable coin lockers where you can store your belongings.

  • The museum has a coffee shop and a store selling coffee products.

The UCC Coffee Museum is a minute’s walk from Minami Koen station on the Kobe New Transit Port Liner. The museum is also within a 5- to 10-minute walk of several major hotels and such attractions as the Bando Kobe Science Museum and the Kobe International Conference Center. There is no parking at the museum.

The UCC Coffee Museum is open Tuesday through Sunday, from midmorning to late afternoon. It is closed on Mondays and the year-end holidays. In the case where a public holiday falls on a Monday, it is closed the following day instead.

Before entering the museum, take a few minutes to admire the building. The striking exterior of the UCC Coffee Museum is designed in the style of an Islamic mosque in recognition of the important role that Islam has played in coffee culture. Coffee was an important drink in Islamic mosques, which led to it being drunk all around the world.
