POINT OF INTEREST

TurboJET

200 Connaught Road, Sheung Wan, Hong Kong, Hong Kong

Zipping over the waves, TurboJET’s fleet of scarlet hydrofoil ferries link Hong Kong and China’s Shenzhen area to Macau in a fraction of the time (or carbon cost) of flying. Services nip between Hong Kong’s Sheung Wan and Macau’s Outer Harbour day and night in a little under an hour. Other routes run shorter and less frequent schedules.

Most travelers use TurboJET to pop from Hong Kong to Macau to enjoy the casinos or from Macau to Hong Kong for a day at theme parks such as Hong Kong Disneyland®. Package tours that include transfers can save time and stress, particularly for first-time visitors. But, whether you book independently or as part of a tour, the comfortable boats are well-equipped. Enjoy Wi-Fi, snacks, drinks, and Duty Free, plus an upscale offer for travelers in VIP classes or on private charters.

  • Ferries do not run during extreme weather, such as typhoons—but as airports also shut down and attractions close, you won’t miss out on much.
  • English is an official language of Hong Kong and widely spoken; while it’s not an official language in Macau, most hospitality professionals will speak it. English speakers are rare in Shenzhen.
  • Citizens of most developed nations enjoy visa-free entry to Macau and Hong Kong. Most nationalities can secure a 5-day visa valid only for the Shenzhen metro area on arrival at the port of Shekou.

In Hong Kong, TurboJet offers departures from Sheung Wan on Hong Kong Island, China Ferry Terminal in Tsim Sha Tsui on the Kowloon Peninsula, Tuen Mun in the New Territories, and SkyPier at Hong Kong International Airport. Macau services run from the Outer Harbour, while scheduled services to the Shenzhen area arrive at the port of Shekou.

TurboJET asks travelers to be at the gate no less than 30 minutes before boarding time. Ferries run between Hong Kong Island and Macau 24 hours a day but schedules for other routes are more limited.

Formerly a Portuguese colony, the island of Macau (also written Macao) is roughly 40 miles (64 kilometers) from Hong Kong. China’s answer to Las Vegas, it’s home to mega-casinos including the Venetian, Sands, Wynn, and home-grown heritage casino the Grand Lisboa. Macau’s historic center, a fascinating mix of Chinese and Portuguese architecture, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
