Tsukiji Fish Market

4 Chome-16-2 Tsukiji, Chuo, Tokyo, JPN

The Tsukiji Fish Market was once the largest seafood market in the world, handling more than 2,000 tons (1,800 metric tons) of marine products a day. Though the market wasn't originally intended to be a major tourist attraction when it opened in 1935, Tsukiji now regularly shows up on visitors’ lists of must-see destinations in Tokyo for its lively atmosphere and incredible sushi.

Please note: The Inner Market and tuna auction relocated to the nearby Toyosu Fish Market in 2020.

The market now comprises just one area—the public Outer Market, which features shops, sushi, and various market stalls. The Inner Market, where the famous fresh tuna fish auctions were held, relocated to Toyosu Fish Market in 2020.

The Tsukiji Market is often visited with a tour guide on city walking and biking tours. Fish market tours can also be combined with other Japanese cuisine experiences, such as sushi-making classes, cooking classes, and tastings. Nearby attractions seen on sightseeing tours include the Hamarikyu Gardens, the Asakusa district, and the upscale Ginza neighborhood.

  • The Inner Market at Tsujiki Fish Market relocated to Toyosu in 2020, roughly 1.5 miles (2 kilometers) away from Tsujiki—head there to see the famed tuna auction.

  • The Outer Market, home to vendors and restaurants, still calls the original Tsujiki Fish Market home.

  • Take advantage of the many vendors in the Outer Market who sell some of the best sushi and freshest seafood you’ll ever taste.

  • The Outer Market of the Tsujiki Fish Market is technically wheelchair accessible, but not that easy to navigate due to the large crowds.

Tsukiji Fish Market is located in central Tokyo above Tsukiji Shijo Station on the Oedo subway line. It is also a 5-minute walk from Tsukiji Station on the Hibiya subway line. If arriving by rail, the Shimbashi Japan Railways station is a 15-minute walk away from the market. Note that trains and buses do not run 24 hours in Tokyo; you can take a taxi to the market or plan on finding lodgings nearby.

Tsukiji Market is open Monday through Saturday, with closures on holidays and occasional Wednesdays. Shops in the Outer Market have varying hours, but the area is generally open between very early morning and mid-afternoon. Arrive early for super-fresh seafood and then explore other attractions in the area.

Opened in 2020, Toyosu Fish Market is the home of Tsujiki's famed early-morning tuna auction and is almost twice the size of its predecessor. Arrive early for the tuna auction and watch from dedicated viewing platforms before exploring the seafood and fresh produce stalls. Many of the same eateries that were once available in Tsujiki can be found here. The market's closed on Sundays.

Tsukiji Fish Market is one of Tokyo’s most visited attractions, and it’s famous for one thing—fish! Although the Inner Market and tuna auction moved to Toyosu Fish Market in 2020, you can still visit the Outer Market, home to some of the city’s most renowned fish and seafood restaurants.

Tsukiji Fish Market is located in the Tsukiji district of central Tokyo, near the shopping district of Ginza and the nightlife district of Shimbashi. The closest subway stations are Tsukiji Shijo Station (Oedo Line) and Tsukiji Station (Hibiya Line), both a quick five-minute walk from the market.

Yes, Tsukiji Fish Market is still open. However, Tsukiji’s Inner Market, with its wholesale fish market and famous tuna auction, has now relocated to Toyosu Fish Market. You can still browse the Outer Market with its many stalls and enjoy delicious fresh fish and seafood at the many restaurants.

Tsukiji Fish Market doesn’t have official opening hours, but most shops and stalls open early—about 5am—and close by 2pm. The morning is the liveliest time to visit, with the biggest crowds typically arriving between 10am and 2pm, while a few tourist-orientated shops and restaurants stay open until 6pm.

The Outer Market sprawls over several blocks, but the busiest streets are Tsukiji Nishi-dōri and Tsukiji Naka-dōri, which are crammed with small shops, stalls, and restaurants. You can buy everything from fresh fish, seafood, and ready-to-eat sashimi to traditional cooking utensils. Finally, don’t miss the Namiyoke-jinja Shrine near the market.

Yes, in fact, the entire Tsukiji Fish Market is renowned for its top-notch sushi restaurants, many of which are long-established local favorites. Popular spots for fresh sushi include the two Shutoku restaurants, Koromo Sushi, Sushi Dai, and Sushi Sei Honten, while trendy newcomer Ryoheisushi offers a pricier option.
