Trotternish Ridge

One of the most scenic ridge traverses in the U.K., the Trotternish Ridge is a challenging but rewarding walk. Covering almost the entire Trotternish Peninsula on the Isle of Skye, the route leads hikers 22.75 miles (36.5 kilometers) through an otherworldly landscape of cliffs, pinnacles, and needles.

The walk along Trotternish Ridge begins in the village of Flodigarry and continues south to The Storr, a rocky hill overlooking the Sound of Raasay. The trail runs through the landscape of the Quiraing, the largest landslip (landslide) in Britain. The massive pinnacle known as the Old Man of Storr is a highlight along the way. Visitors who don’t want to undertake the entire route can see highlights on guided tours around the Isle of Skye.

  • Trotternish Ridge is a challenging walk with many ascents and descents. Along the way, There are 13 named summits.

  • The entire route should only be attempted by experienced hikers with proper clothing and equipment.

  • Wild camping is legal throughout Scotland, so hikers may pitch their tent along the route.

The Storr parking area is around a 15-minute drive north of Portree, the main settlement on the Isle of Skye. The Storr car park is on the left side of the A855 heading from Portree toward Staffin. You can also get the bus from Portree and request to get off near Storr car park. The bus takes around one hour.

You’ll want good weather to hike Trotternish Ridge as rainy and cloudy conditions can make it difficult to see the edge of the cliffs—and there is no shelter on the ridge. Due to the length of the walk, many people break up the hike into two days and camp overnight on the ridge.

One of the most recognizable attractions on the Isle of Skye is the Old Man of Storr, a 164-foot (50-meter) high rocky pinnacle jutting out from the Trotternish Ridge. The Old Man of Storr is visible from the road, but it’s well worth hiking up to it. The 2.3-mile (3.8-kilometer) route takes around 70 minutes.
