POINT OF INTEREST

Trinity College

University of Cambridge, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire

Founded by Henry VIII in 1546, Trinity College is the largest Cambridge University college and the alma mater of many British Prime Ministers, Royal Family members, and Nobel Prize winners. Here, visitors can explore the 17th-century Great Court, Trinity College Clock, and Wren Library among other buildings, as well as attend public lectures and rent punts for use along the River Cam.

Stop by Trinity College independently and explore the architectural and historical highlights at your own pace with a self-guided audio tour. Alternatively, take an in-person tour—these typically include visits to other Cambridge colleges such as King’s and Pembroke—to gain a deeper understanding of the Trinity College history. First-time visitors may even prefer to combine an introductory city tour with a stop at Trinity College or opt for a full-day excursion to both Cambridge University and Oxford University.

  • Trinity College is a must-visit for history buffs and architecture lovers in Cambridge.

  • Cambridge residents enter for free at Trinity College; otherwise, tickets are available on the door.

  • Access to the Wren Library is always free but expect to queue during the summer.

  • Punts are available for hire from roughly Easter to mid-October.

  • Both the Chapel and Great Court at Trinity College are accessible for wheelchairs and strollers; the Wren Library is not.

Trinity College is situated on the banks of the River Cam in Cambridge. Travelers arriving by train should depart at Cambridge station, before taking a bus or taxi to the city center. From there, Trinity College is just a short walk. It may be more convenient to arrive by private vehicle but there’s no on-site parking for visitors.

Trinity College’s Great Court and Chapel are typically open from 10am to 4:30pm daily. The Wren Library is typically open to the public from Monday to Friday between 12pm and 2pm, and from 10:30am to 12:30pm on Saturdays. Hours may vary outside of term time so check in advance to avoid disappointment.

Punts are flat-bottomed boats designed to be used in shallow waters and are propelled forward by pushing the riverbed using a long pole. Punting is especially popular along the length of the River Cam and visitors to Trinity College can rent punts by the hour for a small fee. Punts are usually available from the mid-morning to the late afternoon between Easter and mid-October. Alternatively, chauffeured punting excursions are available.
