POINT OF INTEREST

Tree of Life (Shajarat-al-Hayat)

Jebel Dukhan, Southern Governorate

Over 400 years old, Bahrain’s mystical Tree of Life (Shajarat-al-Hayat) is one of the country’s top attractions. No one really knows how this ancient mesquite is still alive, as the area receives very little rainfall and there is no known source of water, though some believe that the tree was part of the Biblical Garden of Eden and has magical powers.

The nearly 33-foot (10-meter) Tree of Life draws thousands of visitors a year eager to marvel at its existence. Tourists often visit on a half- or full-day guided Bahrain tour, which will not only take you to the mystical tree but will also show you landmarks like the Al-Fateh Mosque Grand Mosque, the Bahrain National Museum, and more. Book a private tour if you want a bespoke experience, choosing just which attractions, if any, you’d like to see besides the Tree of Life.

  • You don’t need a 4WD to get out to the Tree of Life but do be careful driving in the sand.

  • A fence now surrounds the tree in an attempt to protect it; avoid spray painting and carving your name in the bark to help with preservation efforts.

  • There are toilets available on-site.

The Tree of Life is about 25 miles (40 kilometers) from Manama, the closest big city, and just 1.2 miles (2 kilometers) from Jebel Dukhan. While rental cars and guided tours are the easiest way to get there, you can also take the bus from Manama to Isa Town; from there, a taxi will take you the rest of the way. For those coming from Jebel Dukhan, take a taxi.

The best time to travel to the Tree of Life is between December to March when temperatures in Bahrain are at their most comfortable, though the crowds are bigger this time of year. Try to plan your visit for the evening, when the tree is all lit up at night, for a magical experience.

When visiting Bahrain, try to stay at least three to four days so you don’t try to fit everything into a single day. Visit the Manama Souq, where you can sample chai karak and saffron ice cream, shop for gold jewelry, and pick up some local spices. Souq shopping is a highlight of any trip, so take your time browsing.
