POINT OF INTEREST

Tracy Aviary

589 E 1300 S, Salt Lake City, UT

Tracy Aviary, set inside Salt Lake City’s leafy Liberty Park, is the oldest and largest freestanding aviary in the country. Home to hundreds of bird species hailing from around the world—and offering free-flight shows, interactive talks, and more—it’s a popular destination for local and visiting families and nature lovers.

Founded over 80 years ago, this cultural and ecological site has evolved into one of the country’s preeminent aviaries, and is frequented by bird watchers of all ages and stages. Across wide-ranging habitats and exhibition areas, species ranging from toucans and pelicans to condors and swans can be viewed, while a daily program of talks, shows, and performances gives visitors the chance to meet the keepers and learn more about the exotic birds on display, as well as the aviary’s conservation projects.

Given its location in Liberty Park, it’s easy to plan your visit, and tickets can be booked online ahead of your trip. Tracy Aviary is also included in the Salt Lake 365 Day Connect Pass, which offers free and discounted entry to a number of the city’s top attractions.

  • Tracy Aviary operates the Bird Feeder Café (complete with small climbing wall for kids) and the Nature Store gift shop.

  • The aviary is accessible to wheelchair users. Service animals are also permitted, though keepers will need to clear some of the park’s free-roaming birds before they can enter.

  • Bird shows are offered throughout the day, and are included free with admission; there are no age limits for attendance.

Set across 9 acres (4 hectares) of Salt Lake City’s Liberty Park (southeast of Downtown), the aviary can be accessed by several local bus lines, including the 9, 205, and 209. It can also be reached by taxi or ride-share service, and by bike.

Tracy Aviary is open every day, except Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day, from morning until early evening. During the summer months, it offers late visiting hours on select Mondays, and early-bird hours on select Wednesdays. The aviary is at its busiest during summer months and school holidays, so plan accordingly for a quieter experience.

Every week, the aviary offers a wide range of events, including keeper talks on specific bird species, Liberty Park bird walks, bird shows, and its Lorikeet Adventure (which gives visitors the chance to feed and interact with lorikeets). In addition to its daily offerings, behind-the-scenes experiences are also available, and must be booked in advance. Seasonal events—like the Party for the Planet on Earth Day, the Urban Bird Festival in mid-May, and the winter Lightwalk—round out its full calendar.
