POINT OF INTEREST

Torvehallerne Market

Frederiksborggade 21, Copenhagen, DNK

Spread out over two market halls in the heart of Copenhagen, Torvehallerne Market is the place to go for local and imported produce and gourmet delicacies. Along with around five dozen stalls and vendors selling everything from pastries to oysters, you'll find cute restaurants and cafes serving tasty treats from Denmark and beyond.

While Torvehallerne Market's vast array of high-quality food offerings is by far its biggest offering, it's also a great place to simply walk around and take in the colorful--and varied--displays. The popular market features on plenty of general city tours, including bike tours. It's also a star attraction on several culinary tours, including complimentary tastings and the services of a guide who knows the best spots to eat in the market and beyond.

  • Torvehallerne Market is a must-visit for foodie travelers and photographers. It is also a great spot to people-watch, particularly around mealtimes.

  • The market is wheelchair- and stroller-friendly, with relatively wild aisles between stalls.

  • Free public restrooms are available at the market.

Torvehallerne Market is in central Copenhagen, just north of Ørstedsparken and about a 20-minute walk from Copenhagen Central Railway Station. If you're not coming on foot or by bicycle, the easiest way to get there is to take a train, bus, or line 1 or 2 of the Copenhagen Metro to the Nørreport station, about a block away.

Torvehallerne Market is open daily from mid-morning until evening throughout the year (except for three days around Christmas and New Year’s Day). However, many restaurants in and around the marketplace open early for breakfast or stay open late for dinner. Weekends generally get the most crowds, particularly on Saturdays, so come early to avoid the rush.

While the people-watching opportunities at Torvehallerne Market are great, they’re arguably even better in Freetown Christiania, a large, self-governing intentional community spread out over a former military barracks. Colorful street art, bohemian cafes, and a semi-legal cannabis trade characterize Christiania. The community is entirely car-free, but hop-on, hop-off tours will drop you at the entrance so that you can explore on foot.
