Tokyo Photographic Art Museum
1 Chome−13−3 Mita, Meguro, Tokyo, Kanto, 153-0062
Located in Tokyo's bustling Ebisu district, the Tokyo Photographic Art Museum is a 4-floor celebration of photography. Rather than having permanent exhibitions, It rotates its vast collection to create themed exhibitions that typically last a few months. With its ever-evolving displays and captivating themes, it's the go-to spot for anyone into photography—or if you're just looking for artistic inspiration in Tokyo.
The basics
Most visitors choose to explore the museum independently at their own pace. Entry fees vary depending on the exhibition you wish to visit, so check the schedule in advance. The museum spans four floors, each offering unique photographic perspectives, so take your time to explore thoroughly. You can break up your day with a visit to the on-site café or get some retail therapy at the museum shop.
Things to know before you go
The museum is wheelchair-accessible, with elevators on all floors and wheelchairs available to rent for free on the first floor.
Strollers are available to rent on the first floor, and there’s also a nursing room with a diaper changing station.
Large luggage should be left in a coin locker, or if it's too big, you can leave it in reception.
If it’s raining, you can get to the museum without getting wet by taking a covered route from Ebisu Station in around 15 minutes. This route is wheelchair- and stroller-accessible.
How to get there
The nearest station to the museum is JR Ebisu Station, which is a 10-minute walk if you take the east exit. Alternatively, you can get to Ebisu Station on the Tokyo Metro Hibiya Line, and it's then around a 10-minute walk. Unfortunately, the museum doesn’t have a parking lot.
When to get there
The museum welcomes visitors throughout the year, but it's typically closed on Mondays. To make the most of your visit, it’s best to check the museum's website for the latest exhibition schedules and any special events. To avoid the biggest crowds, come during the week, ideally in the morning.
