Three Gorges Museum

236 Renmin Road, Yuzhong District, Chongqing, CHN

This impressive museum provides unprecedented access to the science, history, and cultural heritage of the Three Gorges region near the Yangtze River. Exhibits showcase traditional painting, calligraphy, and porcelain, as well as ancient coins and sculpture from the Han Dynasty, traditional costumes, and artifacts from southwest China.

The multi-level museum offers visitors a deeper understanding of the Chongqing region with exhibits that tell the story of World War II, the war against Japan, and the plight of more than a million people forced out of their homes for the construction of the Three Gorges Dam. A circular screen theater shows a film featuring the scenery of the Three Gorges prior to the dam’s construction. The free museum often features on sightseeing tours of Chongqing, along with Eling Park, Arhat Temple, Chongqing Zoo, and the General Joseph W Stilwell Museum.

  • The Three Gorges Museum is a must-visit for history buffs and first-time visitors.
  • Visit the museum with a guide to learn more about the objects on display.
  • Audio guides are available to rent from the ticket office.

The museum is located in the Yuzhong District of Chongqing. Travelers can reach the museum by taxi or take metro Line 2 to Zengjiayan Station.

The museum is open Tuesday to Sunday throughout the year. Avoid visiting on weekends and Chinese national holidays, when the free attraction gets particularly busy with Chinese tourists.

The building housing the museum, built in 2005, is a masterpiece in its own right. The cambered walls and vitreous dome are a nod to the Three Gorges project. The building occupies an area of 323,000 square feet (30,000 square meters).
