Theodore Roosevelt Island

Washington DC, DC

Situated on the Potomac River between Washington DC and Arlington, Virginia, Theodore Roosevelt Island is a protected memorial to the country’s 26th president. Spanning 88.5 acres, the park consists of a manmade woodland designed to evoke the region’s original forest habitat and features walking trails and a Roosevelt statue.

Formerly known as Mason’s Island, has no visitor center—its focal point is instead a memorial plaza designed by architect Eric Gugler, complete with a Roosevelt statue by sculptor Paul Manship. Accompanied by several miles of boardwalks and walking trails—and home to a range of bird species and other wildlife—the island is now a popular place to explore (and its views overlooking DC landmarks like the Kennedy Center are another bonus). You can see Theodore Roosevelt Island on a range of DC sightseeing tours, including Potomac River cruises.

  • Vehicles, including bikes, are not permitted on the island (beyond designated parking areas), and camping is also prohibited.

  • Dress comfortably, and bring water. Be mindful of ticks and poison ivy—it may be worth wearing long trousers.

  • Pets are permitted on the island but must be kept on a leash.

  • Visitors to Theodore Roosevelt Island should follow “leave no trace” principles, and take all their garbage away.

  • Theodore Roosevelt Island is free to visit, and no passes are required.

Theodore Roosevelt Island can only be accessed from Arlington, Virginia, even though it is technically a part of Washington DC. If driving, use the northbound lanes of the George Washington Memorial Parkway; parking is available after the Memorial Bridge. If using public transit, take the DC Metro to Rosslyn Station (served by the Orange, Blue, and Silver lines); it is roughly a 10-15-minute walk via a pedestrian bridge.

Theodore Roosevelt Island is open to visitors throughout the year. It’s most popular during the summer, school holidays, and weekends; consider visiting at alternative times for a calmer experience. Free ranger-led tours are offered on Saturday mornings. Note that bathrooms on the island close from October through April.

Theodore Roosevelt Island is one stop on the Potomac Heritage National Scenic Trail, which passes by many of the region’s most important political and historical landmarks. For those on a walking holiday, it’s worth following the trail to other nearby highlights, including Arlington National Cemetery, Rock Creek Park, the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park, and the Clara Barton National Historic Site.
