Tbilisi Aerial Tramway

Cars with tinted glass windows create the perfect opportunity for cityscape photos in climate-controlled comfort—be quick, though, as the ride takes only about a minute and a half. At the top of the hill, explore Narikala Fortress, or get a nature fix in the Tbilisi Botanical Garden. Many city sightseeing tours include a ride on the aerial tramway en route to the fortress.

The cable car departs from Rike Park, across the river from the Old Town. The closest metro station is Avlabari, roughly a 15-minute walk away.

The Tbilisi Aerial Tramway typically runs every day year-round until late at night. Although you can visit Narikala Fortress at any time, the landmark is most attractive when it’s lit up after dark.

Most travelers ride the tramway to get to the ancient Narikala Fortress, which dominates the Tbilisi skyline and affords great views of the city. Established in the fourth century, the fortress is divided into two sections between the Orbeliani sulfur baths and the Tbilisi Botanical Garden, with contemporary St. Nicholas Church on the lower level.
