POINT OF INTEREST

Tampa Hyde Park

Tampa, FL

Just south of Downtown Tampa you’ll find Tampa Hyde Park, a historic neighborhood that evokes the ambiance of old Florida with its collection of homes dating from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Today, it’s not only a desirable residential neighborhood, but also home to Hyde Park Village, lined with upscale boutiques and restaurants.

Strolling through the streets is a great way to admire the architecture of Tampa Hyde Park, which is one of the city's oldest neighborhoods. History buffs should also check out the Moorish-inspired, minaret-domed Henry B. Plant Museum, on the University of Tampa’s campus. Built in the late 20th century as the Tampa Bay Hotel, the museum’s exhibits focus on Gilded Age tourism to Tampa Bay and the hotel’s famous guests.

One of the region’s top shopping, dining, and entertainment venues, Hyde Park Village occupies several city blocks and is a destination unto itself. Check its calendar for events that range from live music and painting classes to a running club and fitness classes.

  • Wear comfortable footwear: strolling the historic streets is a highlight of visiting Tampa Hyde Park.

  • There’s free parking at Hyde Park Village, as well as paid on-street parking around the neighborhood.

  • Hyde Park Village and the Henry B. Plant Museum are both wheelchair accessible.

  • All of Hyde Park Village’s outdoor spaces and patios are pet-friendly.

Tampa Hyde Park is a 5-minute drive south of Downtown Tampa and around a 15-minute drive southeast of Tampa International Airport. Having your own transportation is preferred in Tampa but if you don’t have a car, you can take a HART bus from Downtown’s Marion Transit Center (which takes 10–15 minutes).

While a few cafés and restaurants cater to the morning crowd, the best time to visit Tampa Hyde Park is in the afternoon or evening, when you can enjoy all the stores, restaurants, and bars have to offer—especially during live music nights at Hyde Park Village. Expect crowds during weekend afternoons and nights.

The world’s longest continuous sidewalk, the 5-mile (8-kilometer) Bayshore Boulevard runs by Tampa Hyde Park and connects to Downtown Tampa’s 2.5-mile (4-kilometer) Riverwalk to form a continuous waterfront trail for pedestrians and cyclists through the heart of the city. On this path, you can walk or pedal all the way to top destinations such as Ballast Point Park, the Channel District, and the Ybor City Landmark Historic District.
