Amid Strasbourg’s artful jumble of historic buildings, St. Thomas Church (Eglise St. Thomas stands out for its red brick façade and mix of Romanesque and Gothic architecture. Dating back to the 12th century, the protestant church is one of the many highlights of Strasbourg’s UNESCO World Heritage-listed Grand Île.

Highlights include a 32-foot (10-meter) tall fresco of Saint Michael and an 18th-century Silbermann organ that was once played by Mozart. Don’t miss a visit to the crypt, home to a number of 18th- and 19th-century tombs. Most notable is the Marshal of Saxony mausoleum, the work of sculptor J.B. Pigalle.

The church is open to visitors Monday to Saturday, and mass is held every Sunday. Winter visitors may find that the church is closed in February and March outside of service times. If you’re visiting Strasbourg’s famous Christmas markets, look out for Christmas carol concerts held at St. Thomas Church over the holiday season.

Strasbourg’s UNESCO-listed Grand Île is the city’s historic heart and is crammed with notable landmarks. The Cathedral of Notre Dame is the city’s star attraction and offers panoramic views from its 216-foot (66-meter) high bell tower. Nearby, the Palais Rohan (Rohan Palace) now houses some of Strasbourg’s top museums, while the Maison Kammerzell is a fine example of the city’s half-timbered medieval townhouses. Close to the St. Thomas Church, must-sees include the picturesque La Petite France district and the Covered Bridges.
