St. Nicholas Church (Biserica Sf. Nicolae)

Set in Brasov’s historic Schei district, St. Nicholas Church is an architectural masterpiece featuring a mixture of Gothic, baroque, and Byzantine styles. First built in the late 14th century, St. Nicholas is the oldest Romanian Orthodox Church in the country and remains a bastion of the Romanian Orthodox community today.
St. Nicholas Church was first built out of wood, then replaced with a Gothic stone structure in the late 15th century and expanded in the 18th century. The church features a slender central tower, four smaller corner towers, and an ornate interior decorated with icons and frescoes. Some Brasov walking tours include a visit to St. Nicholas Church along with other attractions such as the First Romanian School, Black Church, and Council Square.
This is an active place of worship, so be respectful of worshippers.
It’s free to enter the church, but donations are accepted.

St. Nicholas Church is located at Unirii Square, in the southwestern part of Brasov. It’s an easy walk from Council Square, a distance of roughly 0.6 miles (one kilometer). You can also take bus No. 50 from Council Square to Unirii Square.
St. Nicholas Church is open daily, year-round. Most people spend less than an hour at the church and cemetery, and usually combine their visit with a trip to the adjacent First Romanian School.
Prominent Romanians—such as Nicolae Titulescu, a diplomat who helped found the League of Nations; Dr. Aurel Popovici, a well-known politician; and poet Vasile Saftu—are buried in the church’s cemetery.
