Sremski Karlovci

Sremski Karlovci, Vojvodina

With vineyards on its doorstep and elegant architecture throughout its historic streets, Sremski Karlovci is a captivating Serbian destination on the banks of the Danube River. Baroque and neoclassical buildings, including several orthodox churches and Serbia’s first secondary school, decorate this former religious and cultural center.

A selection of wine cellars throughout the center of Sremski Karlovci are open for sampling. Between wine tastings, walk around compact Sremski Karlovci. Half a day is enough time for most visitors to experience this small town independently. Most day tours to Novi Sad and the monasteries of Fruška Gora National Park stop here for an hour or two of wine-tasting.

  • Travelers interested in history may appreciate the town's historic role at the center of the Serbian Orthodox Church.

  • There are several restaurants around the Four Lions Fountain for visitors seeking lunch or dinner.

  • Parents with young children may struggle to find things to entertain the little ones or keep them busy.

  • It’s probably best to bring cash when visiting, as few ATMs are in town.

Sremski Karlovci is located very close to Novi Sad and Petrovaradin in northern Serbia. One of the frequent trains from Novi Sad to Sremski Karlovci only takes eight minutes, while regular local buses that run from the center of Novi Sad take a little over 20 minutes. You can also visit Sremski Karlovci from Belgrade by train in under an hour.

There’s no wrong time to visit Sremski Karlovci, although the town may not look as pretty and inviting in winter, and some wineries may operate reduced hours in the off-season. Spring and autumn bring color to this leafy town, while summer is more likely to bring heat and more tourists, two things some may want to avoid.

Because Sremski Karlovci sits on the edge of Fruška Gora, the wines you’ll find in town tend to follow that wine region’s specialty. Welschriesling, also known as Italian riesling or grašac locally, is a common white wine grape in Serbia, especially around Fruška Gora. But you’ll also find red wine grape varieties near Sremski Karlovci, particularly cabernet sauvignon, at local wineries and cellars that you can try.
