POINT OF INTEREST

Solang Valley

Manali, India

The Solang Valley, north of Manali, is one of several smaller valleys stretching off the long Kullu Valley. Travelers come here to hike, ski, camp, paraglide, and ride the cable car for great mountain views, depending on the season. The valley is also the starting point for the Beas Kund Trek, which leads to a high-altitude lake.

Since the opening of the Atal Tunnel beneath the Pir Panjal Range in 2020, more traffic has been passing through the Solang Valley, as the tunnel begins here. But it’s still a good alternative to ever-popular Manali. In the winter you can ski or snowboard, while in the summer you can hike and camp in scenic meadows. Paragliding is possible year-round.

Many people visit the Solang Valley independently, but guided tours can be arranged from Manali and even from Delhi. These typically focus on hiking or paragliding, and sometimes include sightseeing and other activities in the Kullu Valley and around Manali.

  • Many roadside vendors rent out warm clothing in the winter, but it’s typically of low quality, so it’s better to bring your own.

  • As in Manali, parking in the Solang Valley can be a challenge at peak times; consider taking a bus or staying there for more convenience.

  • Visitors coming from places with skiing opportunities may prefer a trip in the summer, as some foreign travelers have found the skiing here to be less enjoyable than at home.

The Solang Valley branches northwest off the Leh–Manali Highway at the Solang–Leh Intersection. Many travelers take a taxi or private car to reach the Solang Valley, but you can also easily take a bus from the main bus stand in Manali. It’s about a 40-minute trip and tickets are inexpensive.

The Solang Valley is a popular year-round destination, but be aware that winters are very cold and snowy. This is ideal for snow sports, but not for many other outdoor activities. The roads in this area are generally good and are passable at lower altitudes throughout the winter (Manali is at 6,725 feet/2,050 meters).

Avid hikers may want to trek up to Beas Kund, a high-altitude lake (12,139 feet/3,700 meters) that is the source of the Beas River. The 3-day route starts from Solang Nallah in the Solang Valley, and while there are steep parts, overall it’s a moderate trek. The views of the Pir Panjal Range and lush meadows between May and October are impressive.
