Ahmedabad’s ornate Shree Swaminarayan Mandir Kalupur temple belongs to the Swaminarayan Sampraday sect of Hinduism. It was built during the early 19th century and comprises several buildings, including the main temple, a women’s temple, mansions, and gateways. It’s a beautiful place to visit, whatever your culture or faith.

Ahmedabad is full of impressive religious architecture and while much of it in the Old Town area is Islamic, the Shree Swaminarayan Mandir Kalupur is a fine example of Gujarati Hindu architectural styles. Rajasthani, Marathi, and British design styles are also evident.
Travelers can visit independently while exploring this part of the city, or on a guided walking tour; tours offer a good way to navigate the often-congested area while learning more about its culture and heritage. The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation has developed a popular 1.2-mile (2-kilometer) heritage walking tour route, which begins at this temple. You can follow it independently or join a guided walk.

How to get there
The temple is in the Kalupur district of central Ahmedabad within the Old Town area. It features on some walking tours of Ahmedabad or you can visit independently on foot. If you’re arriving by vehicle from another part of the city, auto rickshaws are preferable over taxis due to difficulty navigating the narrow, congested streets.
When to get there
The temple is open daily, from early in the morning until around noon, then again from mid-afternoon until late in the evening. Aarti (worship) is held several times a day: pre-dawn, early morning, mid-morning, early evening, and late evening. If you happen to visit during aarti and aren’t worshipping yourself, give devotees space.
Visit the Hutheesing Jain Temple
There are so many mosques, temples, and shrines in Ahmedabad that architecture enthusiasts and spiritual seekers will be occupied for days. To see another strikingly unique religious site, check out the Hutheesing Jain Temple. The white marble, mid-19th century temple contains elaborately carved pillars, spires, and a recently added 255-foot (78-meter) minaret. It can be found north of the Old Town.
