Shidu Nature Park
Fangshan District, Shiduzhen, Beijing
The Juma River snakes through Shidu Nature Park and its landscape of striking limestone karst formations, making it a photogenic spot from almost every vantage point. The park in China’s Fangshan District encompasses some 74,131 acres (30,000 hectares) and is a popular day trip from Beijing for those who enjoy the great outdoors.
The basics
Choose your own adventure within the nature park, with a menu of activities that includes bungee jumping, rock climbing, and river rafting, as well as the opportunity to stroll around and see the different paintings, inscriptions, and memorials that add an artistic layer to the setting. Shidu spills over into villages, with the valley making way for farm animals and scenes of rural life; be sure to explore places such as Cottage Scenic Spot, Monkey Mountain, Wang Jingxian Valley, and Bali Valley. Self-guided tours to the park offer the convenience of roundtrip transportation from Beijing, with the freedom and flexibility to explore at your own pace.
Things to know before you go
- Shidu Nature Park is popular with outdoors enthusiasts and adventure travelers.
- Admission to the park is free, but most activities have a separate fee.
- Be sure to wear sturdy shoes suitable for walking over uneven surfaces, and bring sun protection and water.
How to get there
Shidu Nature Park is located abot 2 hours from Beijing. If not arriving as part of a tour, you can reach it by bus from Tianqiao or train from Beijing West Railway Station.
When to get there
While the park itself is always open, most of the attractions and activities inside operate daily from morning until early evening. The best time to visit is on a weekday during the spring or fall, when temperatures are pleasant for being outdoors. Avoid visiting on Chinese national holidays.
Ten Ferries Scenic Spot
Shidu Nature Park is sometimes called the Ten Ferries Scenic Spot. Many years ago, the fast-flowing waters of the Juma River prohibited the building of bridges over the water. Instead, ferry service was offered at the 10 major turns of the river. Modern bridges have since replaced the ferries, but the name remains.
