SCMAGLEV and Railway Park

3 Chome-2-2 Kinjofuto, Minato, Nagoya, Aichi

Nagoya’s SCMaglev and Railway Park is a museum operated by Central Japan Railways. It exhibits a range of real trains, from old-time locomotives to ultra-modern bullet trains. The museum traces the advances of high-speed rail in Japan, a form of transport that many visitors take advantage of.

SCMaglev and Railway Park is a fun and interactive modern museum that will appeal to kids and adults interested in transport and technology. You can see several dozen retired trains—you can view some from underneath for a better understanding of how they work. There are three different train simulators and the second floor is mostly dedicated to interactive learning experiences for young children. Travelers usually visit the museum independently while in the Nagoya area or when traveling between Tokyo and Osaka by Shinkansen.

  • There’s an entry fee for the museum; school students and children aged three and above pay a reduced fee, while kids under two go free.

  • There’s a separate fee for riding the train simulator; tickets are sold on a first-come, first-served basis. The Shinkansen driving simulator, conventional train driving simulator, and conventional train crew simulator all have different prices.

  • A free audio guide is available to visitors to the park. Use the park’s WiFi connection to access the guide from your smartphone.

The park is 25 minutes from central Nagoya by train. From Nagoya station, take the Aonami Line to Kinjofuto station. There’s no parking lot onsite so travelers with vehicles will need to park elsewhere.

The park is open from mid-morning to late afternoon, Wednesday through Monday. The last admission is 30 minutes before closing time, but most visitors will want to spend longer at the park. Although it’s usually closed on Tuesdays, if a public holiday falls on a Tuesday it will open then and close the following day instead. The park is closed between December 28 and January 1.

Visitors to Tokyo who are interested in learning more about Japanese railways should check out The Railway Museum. Located in Omiya, Saitama City, it’s just 30 minutes by train from central Tokyo and is a handy alternative to the SCMaglev and Railway Park in eastern Japan. It delves into the history of the railways in Japan and imagines what the future holds. The museum exhibits one of the first trains to operate in Japan, dating from 1872.
