Science City Kolkata is a huge science park, consisting of a museum, outdoor gardens, auditoriums, and a convention center, which is packed with fun interactive exhibits. It’s extremely family friendly, and explores everything from space to ecosystems, dinosaurs, evolution, and much more. You won’t struggle to fill a full day here, which makes the trip from central Kolkata truly worthwhile.
The basics
Science City Kolkata, indirectly operated by the Government of India’s Ministry of Culture, is the largest science center in India. Whatever aspect of science you’re into, there’s probably an exhibit, show, or attraction to satisfy that curiosity. You can also ride a cable car, play in an outdoor maze, and see a colorful musical fountain.
Most travelers visit independently to enjoy the center at their own pace. You could include a visit on a customizable private tour of Kolkata, but this might not allow sufficient time to explore.

- Different ticket types are available depending on which parts of the complex that you want to visit—three different packages combine entry to some of the most popular areas.
- Note that shows presented in the Fulldome 3D Digital Theatre are mostly in Hindi, with some in Bengali.
- Bring a picnic or buy snacks and drinks from vendors within the park.
How to get there
Science City Kolkata is located in the south east of Kolkata, about 6 miles (10 kilometers) from the city center, beside a busy highway flyover. The easiest way to get there is via taxi, although factor in time for sitting in traffic. There’s no rail or metro connection and while public buses do serve the route, they can be slow and uncomfortable. There is a large parking area for those arriving by car.
When to get there
Science City Kolkata is open daily between mid-morning and evening, with the last tickets sold an hour before closing. Shows play in the Fulldome 3D Digital Theatre every hour, and last around 25 minutes. While the park can be busy with school groups during the week, it is especially popular with local families on the weekends.
Visit the M. P. Birla Planetarium
For a science fix in Kolkata’s city center, check out the M. P. Birla Planetarium, conveniently located across Cathedral Road from the Victoria Memorial. The planetarium screens space-related films in a domed theater several times a day in English, Hindi, and Bengali. The films change periodically.
