Sapphire Point Overlook

At 9,500 feet (2,896 meters) in Summit County, Colorado, Sapphire Point offers scenic views of Dillon Lake and Reservoir, and the Gore and Tenmile mountain ranges. An easily accessible overlook and day-use area, it’s a popular hiking destination and location for small weddings.

Sapphire Point Overlook is reachable via a short and paved 0.1-mile (0.2-kilometer) trail, though you can also complete the entire 0.6-mile (1-kilometer) loop trail. Further along the loop trail, you can admire views of the Grays and Torrey Peaks. Sapphire Point Overlook is easy to visit independently, though it’s also included as a stop on some sightseeing tours of the Breckenridge area from Denver, along with other highlights such as Red Rocks Amphitheater, historic Georgetown, and Loveland.

  • Wear comfortable shoes and bring water and sun protection as the trail is only partially shaded.

  • Benches and picnic tables are available towards the end of the trail.

  • The trail is paved, with minimal elevation changes, making it family-friendly. It is technically not ADA-accessible, though renovation is underway to make it accessible.

  • Sapphire Point Overlook can be reserved for private functions in 3-hour blocks for up to 30 people (though the site must remain open to public access)

  • There are a lot of chipmunks in the area. Do not feed them as they are wild animals.

  • Pit toilets are available at the trailhead.

  • Dogs are allowed on the trail but must be kept on a leash.

Sapphire Point Overlook is in Summit County, Colorado near Frisco and Dillon. From I-70, take exit 203 Frisco/Breckenridge and travel south on Highway 9 for 5 miles (8 kilometers). Then, turn left on Swan Mountain Road for 2 miles (3 kilometers) until you reach a small parking lot. There is limited parking at the parking lot. Parking on Swan Mountain Road may result in a citation.

Sapphire Point Overlook is open year-round, though the pathway to the scenic overlook is not maintained over the winter and can be icy. It’s a very popular location, including for weddings. Visit in the morning during the week to avoid crowds. The views are particularly scenic around sunset.

Visitors looking for additional recreation opportunities can take advantage of more than 7 miles (11 kilometers) of paved trails nearby, part of the 50-mile (80-kilometer) long Summit County trail system, or the Old Dillon Reservoir Trail. Dillon Reservoir also offers a variety of water recreation opportunities, including boating, sailing, and fishing for rainbow and brown trout.
