San Fruttuoso

This tiny bay, named for the 10th-century abbey that sits at the water’s edge, is one of the most picturesque nooks on the Ligurian coast. Accessible only by boat or a steep trail, San Fruttuoso is famed for its crystalline water, dramatic cliffs, and relaxed atmosphere that seems worlds away from crowded Portofino.
Though you can visit the Benedictine abbey on the beach, the biggest draw here is the bay itself, a popular stop on private boat tours along the coast. Explore the beautiful interiors of the abbey complex, including the church, crypt, and gardens, and then relax at the beach for the afternoon, enjoying views of the wooded cliffs, 11th-century Nolare Tower, and turquoise water.
*You’ll need to cover your shoulders and knees to enter the abbey church and complex. *The beach has a stretch of free public beach and a beach club where you can rent a lounger and umbrella. *There is a waterfront restaurant and bar on the beach for snacks and lunch. *There are no shops on the bay, so be sure to bring your swimsuit, towel, sunscreen, and anything else you may need.
San Fruttuoso can only be reached via a steep hiking trail that takes about an hour on the way down and twice that to climb back up, or via boat. There are public ferries from Portofino and Camogli, or you can take a private boat tour along the coast.
The Benedictine abbey has unpredictable opening hours and days that vary quite a bit depending on the season and weather. Check the schedule carefully if planning to visit the complex while on the bay.
