San Agustin Church and Museum

General Luna Street, Intramuros, Manila, Metro Manila

Located in the historic Walled City of Old Manila, the beautiful baroque Church of San Agustin is both the oldest church in the country and a designated UNESCO World Heritage site. Highlights include the tombs of several historical figures—including conquistadors, statesmen, and artists—as well as the adjoining San Agustin Museum.

As one of the city’s most popular attractions and religious sites, a visit to the Church of San Agustin is typically included on most half-day, full-day, and themed Manila tours which usually include hotel pick-up in Metro Manila. Easier than visiting independently—although that’s also an option—these tours typically help you cover more ground by bus, private vehicle, or colorful jeepney, as well as explore top attractions such as Fort Santiago, Manila Bay, Rizal Park, and more.

  • The church and adjoining museum are a must for history buffs.

  • Visit with an English-speaking tour guide to learn more about the church's history or consider attending a mass—most are offered in English.

  • Travelers should set aside at least an hour or two for a visit.

  • While the church is free to enter, the neighboring museum has a small entrance fee.

The easiest way to visit the San Agustin Church and Museum, located on General Luna Street in the Intramuros, is on a guided city tour. However, it's also possible to visit independently and the site is easily accessible on both foot and public transport. The nearest train station is Central Terminal on LRT 1, while the Pier jeepney route passes in front of Manila Cathedral, a short walk from San Agustin.

The church is open daily throughout the year. Visiting during mass has both benefits and drawbacks, so be sure to check the schedule in advance of your visit. Keep in mind that the site's museum closes for an hour at lunch, while the church remains open. The museum's galleries are also air-conditioned, making it a popular stop on hot afternoons.

The Church and Museum of San Agustin are just two of the top attractions situated within Manila's historic Intramuros district. While you're in the area, be sure to pay a visit to Fort Santiago, Casa Manila, and more; alternatively, combine stops at all the Intramuros attractions on a handy city tour.
