Salona

Salona, HRV

Located just outside of Split in Croatia, Salona is an ancient town that brings Greek and Roman history to life. Once the capital of the Roman province of Dalmatia, Salona is home to ancient ruins, including thermal baths, an amphitheater, and a Roman aqueduct. The golden light on the stone is reason enough to visit these beautiful Roman ruins.

Originally established by the Greeks and later conquered by the Romans, Salona is an ancient town with layers of history. While many relics and artifacts uncovered in Salona are on display at the Archaeological Museum of Split, this site is worth a visit of an hour or two. In addition to the Roman aqueduct and thermal baths, there are early Christian graveyards and basilicas and several of the city’s old gates.

  • The highlight of a visit to Salona may be admiring what was once an amphitheater that could seat up to 20,000 people.

  • Bring sunscreen, water, and a hat, as the site is exposed to the sun.

  • Salona is not accessible for wheelchairs and strollers; paths are bumpy, and you'll need to climb stairs to explore.

  • Salona offers a glimpse into the region’s ancient history with less crowds than visitors will find at the major historic landmarks in nearby Split.

Salona is located 3 miles (4.8 kilometers) north of Split. Several local bus lines offer public transportation from Split to Salona, and the journey takes about 25 minutes. Some visitors take a taxi from Split to Salona. The ruins provide parking for those who arrive in a car.

The area around Split in Croatia is known for its mild temperatures throughout the years and summers, which can be punishingly hot. While summer is a popular time to visit, be prepared for very hot temperatures and lots of sun. An alternative is to visit in spring (May and June) or fall (September and October) to avoid the heat and crowds.

Many visitors to Split explore the fantastic Roman ruins of Diocletian’s Palace. But before Diocletian moved into the palace in Split, Salona was his hometown. Visit Salona to complete your exploration of this Roman Emperor’s influence in the region.
