POINT OF INTEREST

Sóller

Sóller, Majorca

Nestled deep within the orange-grove-covered Valley of Gold (Vall d’Or), Sóller is the ideal base for exploring the surrounding Serra de Tramuntana. Before taking to the trails, spend some time strolling the labyrinthine streets, admiring the art galleries, and enjoying what Sóller is best known for—oranges.

Sóller is about a 15-minute drive from the coast, and you can easily see the highlights of the town—including the botanic garden and Saint Bartholomew Church—in a single day. An overnight stay gives you the chance to venture on foot or by bike into the mountains or explore the Port de Sóller. Full-day tours of Mallorca’s northern reaches usually stop by Sóller along with attractions like the Canyon de la Calobra and Valldemossa.

  • Hikers and cyclists won’t want to miss Sóller, which is crisscrossed by trails suitable for all levels.

  • Sóller is a good stopping point for hikers tackling the long-distance Dry Stone Route.

  • Sóller is surrounded by orange groves, so be sure to sample some freshly squeezed orange juice, orange chutney, or orange balsamic vinegar.

  • Narrow streets and uneven sidewalks can make Sóller tricky for wheelchair users to navigate.

Situated in the northwest of the island of Mallorca, Sóller is 16 miles (26 kilometers) from Palma. While you can get to Sóller by shuttle, taxi, or rental car, catch the vintage Palma to Sóller (Ferrocarril de Sóller) train—which normally runs from April to October—for a journey almost as interesting as the destination.

Sóller is a year-round destination that tends to be busier in summer and on weekends. Stop by on a Saturday to wander the town’s lively market. Visit in late August for the St. Bartholomew celebrations; go in May for the Moors and Christians Festival; or check out the Orange Festival in March.

Palma is a typical base for travelers in Mallorca, as you can get to most points on the island from the capital in just one day. Swap Palma’s hustle and bustle for a visit to Mallorcan wine country in Binissalem; seek sanctuary in Lluc; or soak up the sights in Valldemossa. Party animals can head about a half hour west to Magaluf, known for its after-dark appeal.
