Royal Palace of La Almudaina (Palau de l’Almudaina)

Carrer del Palau Reial, Palma, Majorca

Built by the Romans, the Royal Palace of La Almudaina (Palau de l’Almudaina), overlooks the scenic bay in Palma, capital city of the island of Majorca, Spain. Visit this majestic site to see how antiquity lived throughout the centuries and today; the palace remains the official residence of Spain’s royals during visits to Majorca.

The history, location, and Gothic and Moorish exterior of the Royal Palace of La Almudaina makes it a popular sightseeing stop in Palma. Once inside the palace, see what was once the great banqueting hall, furnished royal apartments, and courtyards. Highlights include the medieval wall tapestries and royal chapel.

Unpack more about the palace’s history by listening to an audio guide (available for additional cost) or via a ticketed in-house tour available on the day you visit. Additionally, most tours of the city stop at the Royal Palace, including walking, Segway, e-bike, and e-scooter tours. To see the palace illuminated at night, choose an evening tour. Alternatively, view its façade on a private sightseeing tour or scavenger-hunt-style tour, or stop to admire it on a culinary-and-sightseeing adventure that includes a classic Majorcan meal or tapas.

  • The Royal Palace of La Almudaina is a must-visit for history and sightseeing buffs.

  • Be prepared for security screening at the entrance.

  • Restrooms are available, and most areas of the palace are accessible to wheelchairs and strollers.

  • Last entry is one hour before closing.

The palace sits on the traffic-free Carrer del Palau Reial, opposite Palma Cathedral in old Palma. The easiest way to get there is via public transport: Catch the #15 bus from Palma Intermodal Station (Estacio Intermodal) to the nearby Placa de la Reina stop. Drivers will find ample parking in front of the Cathedral along the Paseo Maritimo.

The palace opens midmorning from Tuesday to Sunday year-round, excluding key public holidays. Closing times vary, depending on the season, and the palace also may close for official occasions, so check the website before visiting. The palace gets busy in summer; visit early or late in the day to avoid crowds.

Most travelers combine a visit to the Royal Palace with Palma Cathedral, known as La Seu. This Gothic edifice boasts stained glass windows and interior flourishes by Antoni Gaudí. Once you’re done here, backtrack to the S’Hort del Rei gardens just beneath La Almudaina. This Arabic-style oasis of orange trees, fountains, and arcades is an idyllic place to relax.
