Rosh Hanikra

Rosh Hanikra, ISR

Perched 210 feet (64 meters) over the Mediterranean Sea in northwestern Israel, the Rosh Hanikra kibbutz is part of the Achziv Natural Reserve. The area is known for its interesting geological formations—namely sea caves and limestone grottoes made over millennia by the sea washing over rocks and creating tunnels and caverns in the cliffside.

When visiting Rosh Hanikra, you can ride a cable car down the cliffs and explore the networks of caves and grottoes on foot. There is also hiking and bike riding along the seafront promenade, and panoramic views of the Mediterranean from atop the cliffs.

A number of full-day tours of Rosh Hanikra depart from from Tel Aviv. These typically explore the western Galilee region, including Caesarea, Haifa, and Acre (Akko), and offer round-trip transportation from your Tel Aviv hotel.

  • There is an entrance fee to visit the grottoes; these are included with some tours.

  • Audio-visual tours of the grottoes are available.

  • The area has a snack bar, restaurant, and restrooms.

  • Make sure to wear or bring shoes with good grip, the paths can be slippery.

  • The cable car is accessible to wheelchair users, but the grottoes are not.

Rosh Hanikra is located in Israel’s Western Galilee region, on the border with Lebanon. It is most easily accessed via transport-included tour from Tel Aviv, but you can also take a car, train, or bus. From Nahariya bus or train station, catch a taxi from behind the station.

The grottos are open year-round. The Galilee can be hot and dry in the summer months, but the warmer months of June - September are also peak tourist season for the area. To see the region at its greenest, and with fewer crowds, visit in the spring.

The ancient port city of Akko is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Inhabited by Romans, Ottomans, Crusaders, Mamelukes, Byzantines, and British, the area is now home to a mix of Christians, Muslims, and Jews, and known for its narrow alleyways with preserved mosques, citadels, and remains of Crusader structures. Akko Old Town offers visitors a blend of history and culture with museums, a lively Arab souk, and a number of notable seafood restaurants.
