POINT OF INTEREST

Rio Negro

Manaus, Amazonas

The Rio Negro (Black River) is not only the largest tributary of the great Amazon River, it’s also the largest blackwater river in the world. Its color—a hue akin to a strong tea—comes from high concentrations of humic acid. Despite that, the river supports more than 700 kinds of fish, making it a rich resource for the Indigenous communities who have lived along its banks for centuries.

Wildlife-rich and surrounded by picturesque rainforest, the Rio Negro is a unique introduction to Brazil’s landscape. Bordering Colombia, Venezuela, and Brazil, the acid-rich waters of the river run fast and deep toward the mighty Amazon River. Visitors can hire a guide, paddle a canoe, or hop aboard one of the local motorized boats to explore this natural wonder. There are also a number of sandy and pebble beaches along the riverbanks to fish or rest and enjoy the views.

  • The Rio Negro’s dark waters are a must-see for any budding adventurer, wildlife fan, or angler.

  • The river is not suitable for swimming in some parts due to fast-flowing water—be sure to check before jumping in.

  • Pink dolphins live in the Rio Negro, so be on the lookout for them on your travels.

  • The color of the black water of the Rio Negro and the muddier water of the fast-flowing Amazon come together at their meeting point and is a perfect photo opportunity.

It’s best to book a tour or organized trip to the Rio Negro to get the most out of your experience, as it’s not easy to find some of the river’s best beaches and viewpoints. You can organize these from Bonito.

Try to avoid the end of the rainy season between February and April, as this is when much of the plains and areas located close to the Rio Negro and Amazon River typically flood.

Many keen anglers visit the Rio Negro to try their hand at catching wild peacock bass. These huge fish are a grand prize, and tours and fishing trips are regularly organized for interested individuals and parties. Fly fishing and spin fishing are the most popular forms of fishing on the Rio Negro, and you can rent equipment such as rods from tour operators here.
