Rio Grande Gorge Bridge

El Prado, New Mexico

The Rio Grande Gorge Bridge spans the Rio Grande River over a landscape scarred by ancient volcanic activity and water erosion. Ten miles (16 kilometers) outside of Taos, the area offers both a man-made and natural attraction stunning in its beauty. The bridge appears in several Hollywood films, including Natural Born Killers, Wild Hogs, and Terminator Salvation.

The “Gorge Bridge,” as locals call it, is the second-highest bridge on the US Highway System and the fifth-highest in the country. But its real draw is its elegant design, and the bridge won the title “Most Beautiful Steel Bridge” in the mid-60s. Today, you can safely walk or bike the bridge on either side. Peer over its edge, relive a Hollywood moment, and take in the extraordinary desert landscape.

From Taos, head north on US Highway 64/New Mexico State Road 522 for roughly 3.5 miles (5.6 kilometers) until you reach the last 4-way intersection of town. Turn left onto US Highway 64 West and drive about 8 miles (12.9 kilometers) to the bridge. Parking areas are on both sides of the highway. From Tres Piedras in the north, take US Highway 64 East for about 20 miles (32.2 kilometers).

The landscape around the Rio Grande Gorge Bridge beautifully showcases the seasons—sometimes snowy, sometimes green, and sometimes steaming. This high desert area is a land of extremes. Temperatures can range from below freezing to soaring near 100°F (37.8°C), depending on the time of year. During the summer months, a visit in the early morning or late afternoon will offer the most comfortable temperatures.

Just beyond the bridge lies the Greater World Earthship Community. This private residential community uses passive solar architecture, thermal mass construction, renewable energy, innovative water systems, and the use of natural and repurposed materials. This off-the-grid concept was created by Michael Reynolds and can be toured daily, usually from morning to afternoon. Several “Earthships” (rental homes) are available for nightly stays.

  • Outdoor-minded travelers can kayak, fish, and hike on a section of the Rio Grande, one of the first designated National Wild and Scenic Rivers in the country.

  • Stretch your legs on the West Rim Trail, accessed from the parking lot on the west side of the bridge, and be rewarded by additional stunning gorge views.

  • Bungee Expeditions offers thrill seekers the opportunity to jump from the Rio Grande Gorge Bridge, the highest active bungee jump site in the country.
