POINT OF INTEREST

Ricardo Brennand Institute (Instituto Ricardo Brennand)

Rua Mário Campelo 700, Várzea, Recife, Pernambuco

With its castle-inspired buildings among swathes of Atlantic forest reserve, the Ricardo Brennand Institute is a museum like no other. The brainchild of Brazilian collector Ricardo Brennand, the complex comprises a history museum, armory, art gallery, library, and sculpture garden featuring art and artifacts from Europe, Asia, and South America.

Tours of the Ricardo Brennand Institute typically include transfers from Recife and a few hours to explore the vast museum grounds. Follow the palm-lined paths between the red-brick fortress, church, and outbuildings, and give yourself time to browse the various exhibition spaces. Highlights include a vast collection of medieval armory and white weapons, a library of more than 60,000 books, and paintings by Dutch artist Frans Post.

  • Nature lovers will be in their element at the cultural center—look out for wild monkeys swinging from the trees as you stroll the gardens.

  • Admission tickets include access to all exhibitions, galleries, and gardens. Children under five go free.

  • There are restrooms, a gift shop, and a restaurant on site.

  • The museum and grounds are mostly accessible for wheelchairs and strollers.

The Ricardo Brennand Institute is in the Várzea neighborhood of Recife, about nine miles (15 kilometers) west of downtown. It’s about a 40-minute drive or taxi ride from downtown Recife and the beaches, and there’s no public transport, so it’s a good idea to book a tour with transfers included.

Opening hours are limited at the Ricardo Brennand Institute. The cultural complex is open from lunchtime to late afternoon from Tuesday through Sunday; the last entry is strictly at 4:30pm. For free entry to the museum, time your visit for the last Tuesday of the month (except in January, July, and December) when admission is free on a first-come, first-served basis.

As one of North Brazil’s cultural hubs, Recife has an eclectic collection of museums and galleries to browse. Dive into the region’s colonial history and art at the State of Pernambuco Museum, visit one of South America’s oldest Jewish museums at the Kahal Zur Israel Synagogue, and admire local art and handicrafts at the House of Culture (Casa da Cultura de Pernambuco). Or, head to neighboring Olinda to explore the Pernambuco Sacred Art Museum (MASPE).
