If Rehoboth Beach is the largest beach resort in Delaware, then the town’s boardwalk is its crown jewel. Serving up nostalgic seaside fun, this traditional wooden boardwalk stretches for 1 mile (1.6 kilometers) right along the beach. Lined with eateries, restaurants, arcades, and even an amusement park, it’s an ideal summertime—or anytime—destination.
Rehoboth Beach is an East Coast favorite for relaxing by the shore, and its adjacent boardwalk is the perfect complement. With a range of bars, restaurants, shops, and entertainment options, it’s buzzy by day and night, and popular among visitors of all ages.
One of the highlights of the boardwalk is Funland, an old-fashioned amusement park that first opened in 1962. And no walk along the boardwalk is complete without some old-timey treats (like funnel cakes from Starkey’s Funnel Cake Factory or salt water taffy at Dolle’s Candyland), or visiting Zelky’s Beach Arcade. Capping it off, the Rehoboth Beach Bandstand at the end of the boardwalk hosts free concerts throughout the summer on weekend evenings.
Public restrooms are available along the boardwalk.
Dogs must be kept on leashes at all times, and are prohibited on the boardwalk and beach from May 1 to September 30.
There’s a bike and surrey rental on the boardwalk, though bikes have limited access during the summer months.
Skateboards are banned from the boardwalk, while inline skates and roller skates are banned from May 15 to September 15.
Drinking open containers of alcohol on the boardwalk and beach is forbidden.
The Rehoboth Beach Boardwalk runs along the beach from Surf Avenue down to Prospect Street. There are a number of access points along the boardwalk, and it’s easy to explore on foot or by bike.
The Rehoboth Beach Boardwalk is open throughout the year. The summer high season, from mid-May to mid-September, is by far the most popular time to visit, and you should prepare for crowds. For a somewhat calmer experience, visit during the spring or fall, or aim for a weekday. During the winter, many businesses close for the season.
Rehoboth Beach comes alive during the summer—and that’s especially true during the Fourth of July. Independence Day fireworks are a tradition here, and the boardwalk and beach are a prime viewing locale. Be sure to secure your spot early (we’re talking hours early), as nearby streets close to traffic.
