Römerberg Square

Römerberg 26, Frankfurt, DEU

Frankfurt’s most important public square, Römerberg is a highlight of the city’s Old Town (Altstadt) and one of its top tourist destinations. A major gathering place since the 15th century, and host to bustling markets and festivals, Römerberg Square is known for its heritage architecture and for being the seat of the local government.

While it was almost totally destroyed during World War II air raids in 1944 (like the rest of Frankfurt’s Altstadt), Römerberg Square has since been rebuilt according to the medieval style. Today, the narrow, half-timbered buildings that line the square—including the six that make up the famed Ostzeile complex—are celebrated for their beauty. In addition to its heritage architecture, and many cafés and restaurants, the square is also home to the landmark Römer (Frankfurt’s City Hall). Given its importance, Römerberg Square is a prominent stop on walking tours and Altstadt itineraries.

  • Römerberg Square is mostly level, though its cobblestoned surface may be difficult to navigate with wheelchairs and strollers.
  • The Fountain of Justice (Gerechtigkeitsbrunnen), set in the middle of the square, is one of Römerberg Square’s highlights.
  • Römerberg Square is fully pedestrianized.
  • Haus Wertheym is the only heritage building in the vicinity to have survived World War II; today, it hosts a traditional restaurant.

To reach Römerberg Square by public transportation, take U-Bahn lines U-4 or U-5 to Dom/Römer station. Alternatively, take trams 11 or 12 to Römer/Paulskirche station. The square can also be easily reached by bike or taxi (though cars cannot drive in the square itself).

Römerberg Square never closes, and is a popular stop throughout the year. That said, it's at its busiest and most festive during December, when it hosts Frankfurt’s Christmas Market.

In the heart of Frankfurt’s Altstadt, Römerberg Square is close to many of the city’s other top attractions. It’s only a short walk to the Frankfurt Cathedral, St. Paul’s Church, and Frankfurt Historical Museum, to name just a few.
