Queenstown Hill

Queenstown, Otago

Queenstown Hill is one of the many hills that surround Queenstown. At 2,975 feet (907 meters) high, it’s more of a mountain, but it’s all relative to the mighty Southern Alps. Rising northeast of central Queenstown, Queenstown Hill is a popular place to hike, although it's quite a steep and demanding climb to the top.

The basics

Also known by its Māori name Te Tapu-nui, the lower section of Queenstown Hill is residential, while the middle and upper parts contain forestry plantations, a sheep farm, and a hiking trail. As you ascend the hill, you will see gorgeous views of Lake Wakatipu and the Remarkables mountains.

The Queenstown Hill Time Walk is a famous track that provides information boards about significant periods of Queenstown’s history. The 2–3 hour hike is quite challenging as it’s steep at the start but then continues at a gentle incline, but it’s worthwhile for active travelers. ATV tours are offered here, and you can hike on Queenstown Hill independently.

Things to know before you go

  • Parts of Queenstown Hill are privately owned, so if you’re walking here, stay on the trail. You can’t reach the true summit as it’s on private land.
  • The first part of the trail is in the shade, but the second part is in the sun, so bring appropriate clothing, hats, and sunscreen. It can also be quite windy.
  • This is a popular track, so you probably won’t have it to yourself, especially if the weather’s good.
  • Dogs aren’t allowed on the trail.

How to get there

The starting point for the hike is a small parking lot off Belfast Terrace near the town center. Look out for a sign showing the start of the trail. The parking lot here isn’t big, so parking is limited, but you can park on the street or otherwise walk from town.

When to get there

Queenstown Hill is 2,975 feet (907 meters) high, compared to Queenstown’s 1,017 feet (310 meters), so it can be colder than at sea level. The hike is open year-round and suitable for hiking at almost any time. In winter, there may be snow, so wear appropriate footwear. It’s also safest to do this hike during the day.

Ride the Skyline Gondola

If you fancy the views without the effort, ride the Skyline Gondola up Bob’s Peak, just west of Queenstown Hill. It’s a Queenstown icon and whisks riders up to the summit in about five minutes. At the top is a restaurant and bar, a souvenir shop, a viewing platform, and two thrilling luge tracks with epic views.
