Puccini Museum

Corte San Lorenzo 9, Lucca, Tuscany

One of Italy’s most famous composers, Giacomo Puccini, was born in Lucca, and his childhood home has been converted into a museum dedicated to his life and work. Music lovers enjoy perusing the collection of photographs, librettos, awards, correspondence, and costumes displayed among the home’s original furnishings.

The Puccini Museum is dedicated to the great 19th-century composer ofLa Bohème andMadama Butterfly in his native Lucca. A highlight of music-themed walking tours of this Tuscan city, the Puccini Museum is one of several city attractions tied to the Puccini family. Tours also visit the Cathedral di San Martino, where the Puccini family were music directors for 124 consecutive years; and the Teatro del Giglio opera house, where Puccini’s works have been performed.

  • Wear comfortable shoes and dress for the weather if joining a walking tour of Lucca.

  • Access to the museum for wheelchair users is via a stairlift, but two interior rooms are not accessible.

  • There is a small book and gift shop that sells items relating to Puccini and Italian opera.

  • The museum often hosts activities for children and families on Sunday afternoons.

The Puccini Museum is located in Corte San Lorenzo in the heart of Lucca’s old town, a short walk from the train station and from most important sights in the historic center.

The museum is closed on Tuesdays in winter, but open daily from April through October. The city of Lucca also holds the Puccini e la Sua Lucca Festival in summer, with evening performances of works by Puccini at the Church of San Giovanni to pair with a visit to the museum.

In addition to his awards, including the Messa a Quattro Voci (1880) and Il Capriccio Sinfonico (1883), the museum holds a rare collection of letters written by Giacomo Puccini, his wife Elvira, his son Antonio, and his publisher, Giulio Ricordi. Visitors can also see a costume fromTurandot worn by Maria Jeritza at the Metropolitan Opera House of New York in 1926.
