Puccini e la sua Lucca International Permanent Festival

Via Duomo 5, Lucca, Tuscany

Born in Lucca, Giacomo Puccini was one of Italy’s foremost composers. Now his native city celebrates him with near-daily performances, as part of the permanent Puccini e la sua Lucca International Festival. Enjoy evening concerts featuring Puccini’s arias performed by international musicians in historic churches across the city.

Lucca’s only festival dedicated to the 19th-century composer ofLa Bohème andMadama Butterfly, the Puccini e la sua Lucca International Festival stages events almost every day of the year. Different musicians present unique programs of Puccini’s works against the backdrop of some of the most beautiful churches in the historic center.

Concerts can sell out—book your ticket in advance. To make the most of your visit, pair a concert with a music-themed walking tour of Lucca and a stop at the Puccini Museum.

  • Dress is smart casual. Churches can be chilly in the evening, so take a jacket or sweater.

  • Concert programs change daily, and feature works by Puccini and other important Italian composers.

  • Most performances feature two singers and a pianist; special gala events can include up to a full orchestra and choir.

  • Performances generally last about an hour, though special concerts can go longer.

  • The summer venue is accessible to wheelchairs; the winter venue isn’t.

Most concerts are held in the Chiesa di San Giovanni in Lucca’s historic center; winter performances take place in the heated Oratorio di San Giuseppe. Both venues are easily reached on foot from Lucca’s train station and main attractions.

Concerts usually begin at 7pm, though gala events may start at different times. Performances are scheduled daily from April through October, and on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday the rest of the year.

Besides attending concerts, check out these Puccini-related attractions: the Puccini Museum; the Cathedral of San Martino, where the Puccini family directed music for more than a century; and the Teatro del Giglio opera house, where Puccini’s works were performed.
