POINT OF INTEREST

Province House

1726 Hollis St., Halifax, NS

The towering columns of Province House are fittingly impressive for the oldest legislative building in Canada. With classic Palladian symmetry and a sizable portrait collection, Province House is an ideal destination for history-lovers. Today, as a meeting place for the Nova Scotia legislative assembly, you can watch history in the making as you observe a House of Assembly sitting.

Province House is open to the public for tours and self-guided exploration, making it the perfect stop on a historic tour of Halifax. Check the online calendar to see if you’ll be lucky enough to witness a House of Assembly sitting, so you can get a true sense of how responsible government was born in Canada. Later, take a stroll along the nearby waterfront or visit the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia.

  • Province House is only open on weekdays.

  • There’s no parking available on-site, but there’s street parking nearby.

  • Province House is wheelchair accessible, with a ground-level entrance at the back of the building.

In downtown Halifax, Province House is conveniently located near several major bus routes. The Scotia Square stop is three blocks away and a stop for several major lines. Otherwise, the neighborhood is an excellent spot to explore on foot. Province House also provides spots to lock your bike up next to the back entrance.

Province House is open to the public on weekdays (excluding public holidays) from early morning until mid-afternoon. As the assembly is not always in session, check the online calendar to see whether you’ll be able to sit in on the proceedings, or watch one of the committees meet. Aim for an afternoon visit which gives you time to explore the waterfront and grab lunch at the nearby Bluenose II Restaurant—a local institution.

If you don’t have time for an in-person visit, or if you want to return to a favorite spot, take advantage of the interactive, online tour of Province House. This 360° tour lets you scroll through the stunning rooms of the house while learning more about the history behind them—peruse the shelves of the Legislative Library, gaze up at the Grand Staircase, and explore the grounds from the comfort of your couch.
