Located about 79 miles (127 kilometers) north of Manaus in Brazil’s Amazonas state, the municipality of Presidente Figueiredo is centrally located to some of the country’s most scenic attractions, making it a popular hiking destination. Nicknamed the “Land of Waterfalls,” it claims more than 100 waterfalls, including Iracema Falls (Cachoeira da Iracema) and Araras Falls (Cachoeira das Araras), as well as grottoes and lagoons.

Trails that run through the Amazon rainforest in Presidente Figueiredo take in all manner of views and experiences, and there are enough of them to make a multi-day trip here worthwhile. Hiking through the deep forest and spotting rare and indigenous animals, birds, and plants is just one option—some trails and tracks take intrepid explorers to local caves and an abundance of nearby waterfalls just waiting to be swum in. Day trip tours are frequent and usually focus on specific highlights, such as the caves or waterfalls.

The most cost-effective way to get to Presidente Figueiredo is by using the regular buses that travel from Manaus, which cost around R$20 per person. Alternatively, many operators offer private transfers from neighboring cities like Manaus. To get to Manaus from abroad, fly into Eduardo Gomes International Airport.

There are no time restrictions here, however, to get the most out of your day in Presidente Figueiredo, it makes sense to travel there earlier in the morning so you have time to see as many of the falls and caves as possible. The morning is also cooler, and the falls can get busier during the late afternoon.

As well as plenty of scenic trails to hike within the jungle of Presidente Figueiredo, there are many pools, waterfalls, and underground swimming holes where you can cool off, from Judeia Grotto (Gruta da Judéia) to Urubui Park (Parque Urubuí). Swimming in the waterfalls of the Amazon rainforest is a unique experience, and by following the Presidente Figueiredo trails, you will come across spots beckoning for you to dip your toes in.

Yes, but you’ll need a car. Public buses run between Manaus and Presidente Figueiredo. Once there, you'll need transportation. You can also join a tour or hire a guide to explore the surrounding waterfalls. Some find it more convenient to take a tour from Manaus.

Presidente Figueiredo is in Brazil’s Amazonas region, so expect hot and humid temperatures year-round. The best time to visit is in the dry season from mid-June through September when the humidity is lower, rainfall is at a minimum, and average temperatures are about 80ºC (27ºC).

Many of Presidente Figueiredo’s natural attractions are free, but there are admission fees and/or parking fees to visit some of the most popular caves and waterfalls. If you’re visiting the town independently, the biggest expense will likely be car rental. Day tours from Manaus start at around US$70.

There are about 100 waterfalls to see in Presidente Figueiredo’s Land of Waterfalls. Some of the most beautiful include the powerful Iracema Waterfall, the pretty cascades of Araras Falls, and Sanctuary Waterfall in the Ecological Reserve Cachoeira do Santuário. It’s possible to swim at all three sites.
