POINT OF INTEREST

Porto Limnionas Beach

Artemisia, Greece

While this site might not be a traditional beach, it boasts some of Zakynthos’ most swimmable waters. You can soak up the sun on the smooth, white rocks or plunge into the turquoise Ionian Sea from the small surrounding cliffs. Plus, a taverna at the entrance serves up hearty Greek classics.

Porto Limnionas Beach is an ideal place to snorkel, but there’s nowhere to rent equipment, so make sure you bring your gear. You can rent sun loungers, but they do tend to get snatched up fast. Some boat tours (most of which transport you by glass-bottom boat) combine a short stop at Porto Limnionas Beach with Navagio Beach (Shipwreck Beach), where a long-abandoned vessel still languishes on the marble-white sand, and the Blue Caves, home to sea caves and stalactites.

  • There are a couple of hotels on either side of the beach, but that’s it regarding accommodation options.

  • Be careful when climbing out of the water, as the rocks can be slippery—water shoes are a good option if you have them.

  • The walk down to the beach isn’t particularly steep, but the ground is uneven and pebbly, so it might pose a challenge for travelers with limited mobility.

  • There’s only one restaurant at the beach, so bring water and snacks, and take all of your litter back with you.

There’s no public transportation to Porto Limnionas Beach, so you can take a taxi or rental car, if you’re not arriving on a tour. From the main area of Zante Town, which is 17 miles (28 kilometers) away, take the Epar. Od. Machairadou–Anafonitrias road for about 45 minutes. There’s a parking lot at the beach.

The peak tourist season in Zante (and all of the Greek islands) is June through September, during the European school holidays. During this period, it’s best to arrive at Porto Limnionas Beach before noon if you want to secure a sunbed or a good spot for sunbathing. There’s no shade on the rocks, so from 11am to 2pm is particularly hot.

The rocky and rugged shorelines of Zakynthos open up to sea caves and grottos, which each have their unique charm. Some of the best ones to visit on a boat tour include the Keri Caves, one of which harbors a sulfur spring, and the Damianos Caves, land-based caverns that offer views of the olive groves and vineyards below.
