The Platz der Republik is often featured on Berlin day tours, particularly walking tours that cover the capital's most important monuments and landmarks. Common stops alongside the Platz der Republik include Alexanderplatz, Brandenburg Gate, Checkpoint Charlie, and the nearby Reichstag building. If arriving at Berlin Central Station, it’s a 15-minute walk along Scheidemannstraße and Heinrich-von-Gagern-Strasse.

Many travelers come to the Platz der Republik to get great shots of the Reichstag building. If this is your plan then it’s best to come early in the morning when crowds are fewer. Otherwise, it’s a great spot to visit year-round, although the summer months of July through August tend to attract the biggest crowds.

Platz der Republik, originally a parade ground established by King Frederick William I in 1735, has undergone multiple name changes over the years, including Konigsplatz. It earned its current name as a symbol of monarchy abolition. During World War II, locals grew vegetables here during food shortages. In addition to its historical significance, it became a hub for rock concerts and festivals, hosting names such as Michael Jackson and David Hasselhoff in the 1980s.
