Platja des Coll Baix

Platja des Coll Baix, Alcudia, Majorca

Burrowed into Mallorca’s northern coastline, Coll Baix Beach (Platja des Coll Baix) is one of its few undeveloped beaches. Cradled by cliffs and turquoise waters and only easily accessible by boat—the secret to its seclusion—the cove is a gorgeous bolthole far from the madding crowds.

Coll Baix will draw outdoorsy types willing to put in the effort to enjoy a remote yet dazzlingly beautiful cove. Its tiny pebbles and crystal waters are heaven for sun-lovers, water babes, and peace-seekers wanting an alternative to Mallorca’s busy beaches.

The trek to Coll Baix is steep and tricky, so many visitors settle with seeing it from the sea: taking boat trips to admire it from offshore and swim in its waters. Most tours depart from nearby Alcudia and range from private and group yacht trips with an on-board lunch to Jet Ski tours and private boat rentals.

  • Coll Baix should only be accessed on foot by those fit enough to negotiate a steep and rocky path.

  • Bring water, sunscreen, sunhats, wet shoes, and food. The beach has no services.

  • Wear sturdy footwear and a backpack to keep your hands free for scrambling over rocks.

  • The beach and trail aren’t suitable for young children or anyone with reduced mobility.

Coll Baix sits on the Victoria Peninsula just north of Mallorca’s Bay of Alcudia, about 4.6 miles (7.5 kilometers) from the resort. Aside from boat trips, most visitors reach the beach by car and foot, making the roughly 25-minute drive from Alcudia via the unmade Carrer de la Muntana to car parks above the cove. It’s then roughly 1 mile (1.5 kilometers) and a 45–60-minute hike through pinewoods and a difficult rocky section.

While Coll Baix is never crowded, it’s most popular in July–August, especially at weekends, when groups of people can dot the pebbles. Aim to arrive early- to mid-morning for the full sun: Late afternoons see the beach fall into the shade, and you’ll need to climb back to the car park before dark. High summer mornings also see tourist boats visit, but they don’t stay very long. To enjoy Coll Baix at its quietest—and possibly when empty—consider early weekday mornings during spring or fall.

Watch for wild goats roaming the woods above the beach. They’re harmless, but they sometimes hit the beach to sniff out picnic food. Be aware, too, that the pebbles shelve steeply, so the sea gets deep quickly. And if you’re snorkeling, it’s worth noting the best marine life is usually found on the cove’s right-hand side.
