POINT OF INTEREST

Pitt Street Mall

182 Pitt St., Sydney, New South Wales, 2000

Pitt Street Mall offers some of the most exciting shopping in Sydney, in a pedestrianized area in the heart of the Central Business District. The retail hub comprises several flagship stores, more than 500 retail spaces, plus an arcade and separate shopping centers—which range from couture and classic fashion to electronics and the latest in athletic wear—all housed in some of the most expensive commercial real estate in Australia.

The basics

During a visit to Pitt Street Mall, you’ll find popular clothing brands including Zara, Cotton On, H&M, and Gap, plus department stores such as Westfield Shopping Center, the Strand Arcade, and David Jones. A footbridge runs across the shopping area, from which you can watch the hustle and bustle below. Pitt Street Mall is a hub for buskers and street performers, so you’re likely to see plenty of free performances throughout the day.

Things to know before you go

  • The pedestrianized area of Pitt Street Mall is easily accessible to travelers using wheelchairs and strollers.

  • Picnic benches outside of the shops provide a great place to take a break and have a coffee.

  • There are plenty of accessible toilets and baby-change facilities inside of the complex.

How to get there

The closest train station to Pitt Street Mall is St. James, on lines T1, T2, T3, and T8, as well as the South Coast Line. Martin Place train station is also only a few minutes’ walk away, and that’s covered by the T4 train line.

When to get there

Pitt Street Mall is open daily from morning until mid-evening, and stays open 1 hour later on Thursdays. During the holiday season in December, the area is decorated beautifully and also operates later opening hours to accommodate late-night shopping.

What to see in Sydney’s CBD

Once you’ve indulged in a little retail therapy, there’s plenty more to see in Sydney’s vibrant CBD. Visit the Art Gallery of New South Wales, home to Aboriginal and Asian art; kick back with a picnic lunch in Hyde Park, one of the oldest parklands in Australia; and discover flora and fauna from around the world at Sydney Botanical Gardens.
