POINT OF INTEREST

Pirita

Pirita, Tallinn, EST

Northeast of the city center, Pirita is a seaside district of Tallinn best known for its long stretch of beach and reputation as one of Tallinn’s wealthiest areas. Besides Pirita Beach, the district’s most important landmarks are the 15th century ruins of Pirita Convent, the Tallinn TV Tower, and the expansive Tallinn Botanic Garden.

Although Pirita is a large district—it’s considerably larger than the city center—most visits tend to focus on a small part of Pirita, namely around the beachfront and the Tallinn Olympic Yachting Centre. You can explore the area on foot, by bicycle, or even rent a kayak or boat if you want to follow the Pirita River upstream. Tours that find their way to Pirita mostly come to visit the beach and promenade.

  • Pirita Beach has changing cabins, kiosks, playgrounds, and a beach bar in summer for beachgoers.

  • Lifeguards are on duty at Pirita Beach in the middle of the day in summer.

  • There are multiple paid parking lots stretched along Pirita Beach, but expect there to be limited available space on busy days.

  • All of Tallinn TV Tower is wheelchair accessible, except for the outdoor deck on the 22nd floor.

  • The Pirita Promenade runs from the Port of Tallinn to the marina at Pirita.

The easiest way to get to Pirita and have time to explore the area, rather than making a quick stop on a broader Tallinn tour, is to go by bus from the city center—a journey that takes roughly 25 minutes. Either take one of the 114, 115, or 174 services from Hobujaama or the No. 1 from Viru Keskus shopping mall to the main Pirita bus stop just outside the entrance to Pirita Convent.

As the closest beach to the center of Tallinn, Pirita Beach is the number one place to go in summer. And if time at the beach is what you’re seeking, the height of summer is the only time to go to Pirita Beach as Baltic summers never last long. However, if you’re more interested in the other attractions of Pirita, those can be appreciated in spring and autumn without the huge crowds.

The Tallinn Botanic Garden sits in a valley on the banks of the Pirita River and features four garden terraces, nine ponds, and grounds that cover 56 acres (23 hectares). Two of the most notable spaces of the Tallinn Botanic Garden are the Arboretum, with its more than 1,500 plants grouped by likeness, and the strikingly modern Palm House with palm and fig trees found inside.
