POINT OF INTEREST

Phantom Ranch

North Kaibab Trail, North Rim, Arizona

The only park lodging below the rim of the Grand Canyon, Phantom Ranch is a remote and rustic place to stay. Getting here is part of the charm: the ranch is only accessible by hiking, riding a mule, or floating down the Colorado River. Thanks to its unique location, the ranch is a highly desired lodging option at the Grand Canyon, so be sure to book well in advance.

Lodging at Phantom Ranch is simple and rustic. You might be surprised to learn that nine stone-walled cabins offer air-conditioning, but beyond that the accommodation is basic: each cabin is home to a concrete floor, desk, toilet, sink, and bunk beds; showers are shared, and not en-suite. The remote location offers a peaceful place to gather around picnic tables under cottonwood trees and explore nearby landmarks such as Ribbon Falls and the River Trail.

  • The canteen offers breakfast and dinner, and is a popular spot for hotel guests and people from the nearby Bright Angel Campground.

  • The ranch is not accessible for wheelchairs and strollers.

  • Bring sunscreen, bug spray, and a small first-aid kit.

  • Read up on the procedure for getting lodging at Phantom Ranch, which includes a lottery system and reservations that you can make more than a year in advance.

While some places to stay at the Grand Canyon let you park your car right beside your lodging, Phantom Ranch is a unique experience. As the only park lodging below the rim of the Grand Canyon, rafting, hiking, or riding a mule is required to reach this ranch. Advance arrangements are a necessity.

Phantom Ranch is open year-round. However, summer temperatures can be excessive and the winter months often see treacherous conditions on the canyon’s trails. The most pleasant times to visit are the spring and fall months, though be prepared for large temperature swings during a single day—layers of clothing and waterproof jackets are always a good idea.

One of the most scenic and rewarding ways to reach Phantom Ranch is hiking. But hikers should be prepared for a challenging journey; 4-5 hours down the South Kaibab Trail and 6-10 hours up the Bright Angel Trail. Hiking boots, plenty of water, bug spray, and layers of clothing are all essential. Duffel service is available for hikers; for a fee each way, a duffel bag of up to 30 pounds will be transported to and from Phantom Ranch for you.
