POINT OF INTEREST

Perth Mint

310 Hay St., East Perth, Perth, Western Australia

When it opened in 1899, the Perth Mint was the third branch of Britain’s Royal Mint in Australia. Today it produces gold, silver, and platinum bullion coins and bars. Visit to see exhibitions about Western Australia’s gold rush history and collections of rare gold nuggets and coins.

A guided tour of Perth Mint takes you through exhibits featuring millions of dollars of gold and other precious metals, including the Australian Kangaroo One Tonne Gold Coin—the world’s largest gold bullion coin. You also learn the Mint’s history and watch gold being melted, poured, and formed into bars. The Mint is a stop on most Perth hop-on hop-off tours, making it easy to visit as part of a day of sightseeing.

  • The Perth Mint shop offers high-end jewelry and gold and silver bars and coins for sale; the shop also buys gold and silver bullion.

  • The shop and exhibition areas are wheelchair-accessible via ramps.

  • Separate tours can be arranged by the Mint for visitors with special needs.

  • There is a cafe on site for light refreshments.

The Perth Mint is in East Perth within walking distance of its central business district. Walk along Hay Street, or take the free Red CAT bus to the Perth Mint stop on Hay Street. Metered street parking is available in the area.

The Perth Mint is open daily except Good Friday, Christmas Day, Boxing Day, and New Year's Day. It’s a popular destination for school field trips, so plan your visit around school hours or school holidays if you wish to avoid student groups.

The Swan River flows through the city just a few blocks south of Perth Mint. The river provides miles of waterfront for walking, biking, playing, and picnicking. Stroll along the river toward the Bell Tower and Elizabeth Quay, where you can drink, dine, take photos, or hop on a ferry or river cruise.
