POINT OF INTEREST

Panik City

Spielbudenplatz 21-22 im Klubhaus, Hamburg, DEU

Hamburg’s Panik City crosses boundaries–and defies them. Part music venue, part gallery, and part hall of fame celebrating German musician Udo Linbenberg, the multimedia venue is truly an all-sensory experience. Head inside the eye-catching building that looks like it’s made from stacked building blocks for a 60- or 90-minute guided tour (in German) to learn more about the rock legend.

Panik City visitors will be guided on a multimedia tour that takes them through Udo Lindenberg’s long and successful career through a variety of exhibits and experiences. Interact with virtual reality headsets, touch tables, audio and video installations, and projections of the man himself for a memorable experience in Hamburg’s entertainment strip. You don’t need to be a Lindenberg fan to enjoy the tour—but it helps.

  • Only children 8 and over are allowed on the tour, as the multimedia experiences aren’t really suitable for little kids.

  • Guides can provide some assistance in English if requested, but the tours and multimedia experiences are only conducted in German.

  • The 90-minute tours won’t pause for visitors to go to the bathroom or have a snack, so use the facilities at the meeting point of the tour, Die Panikbar.

  • Panik City is accessible for wheelchair users. Visitors with a German disability ID card can get discounted tickets by booking over the phone.

Panik City is located on Spielbudenplatz in Hamburg’s St. Pauli district. Parking in the area is limited, so it’s recommended you reach Panik City by public transport. It’s about 1,640 feet (500 meters) from the S-Bahn Reeperbahn station or the subway’s St. Pauli station. Alternatively, take bus number 36, 37, or 111 to the Davidstraße stop.

Panik City is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. On other days, tours run from late morning until mid-afternoon, with extended hours on Saturdays and slightly reduced hours on Sundays and public holidays. Tours of Panik City run every 20 minutes. It’s located in a popular nightlife area of Hamburg, so taking a tour later in the day is a good idea if you want to roll seamlessly from sightseeing to dinner to drinks.

Born in 1946, the man behind Panik City was one of the most influential artists in his homeland in the 1970s—and is still a rock sensation in Germany. Since the mid-1990s, Lindenberg has embarked on a second artistic career as a painter and has been exhibited widely. His Likörelle (little liqueur) paintings are especially noteworthy, created using egg liqueur, blue curacao, grenadine, or whiskey.
