Panagia Tourliani Monastery

While many visitors stick to the shores of Mykonos, the island’s only interior community and second-largest settlement remains a popular destination and inclusion on many round-island tours. Guided tours can take as little as half a day and typically include Ano Mera and its monastery, as well as the unspoiled beaches of the southeastern coast and the whitewashed architecture and windmills of Mykonos Town (Chora). Opt for a private tour to learn more about the monastery during a leisurely visit. A museum inside the monastery displays a collection of vestments and other religious artifacts.

The monastery is about 5 miles (8 kilometers) from Chora Mykonos, the island’s main hub. Although regular bus service runs between Chora and Ano Mera, the village and its monastery can also be visited on 4x4 or scooter tours of Mykonos.

The monastery is open to visitors daily throughout the year. Like many of the island’s top attractions, it can get busy on weekends and during the summer high season, but it’s often quieter than Mykonos Town. The monastery’s biggest festival takes place each year on August 15.

While the monastery is the star attraction in this small village in the middle of Mykonos, it’s not the only reason to visit. Stop for lunch at one of the many Greek tavernas lining the large central square, or head to the fresh produce market to pick up some locally made cheese. The village is also a popular spot for Sunday brunch.
