POINT OF INTEREST

Palm Groves Garden

South Road, Devonshire Parish, BMU

Tumbling down from Bermuda’s South Road to the sea, Palm Groves Garden is a beautifully landscaped private garden that you can explore for free—thanks to its generous owners. Its standout sight is a lily pond with a Bermuda map built into it, along with other fun features such as a Chinese moon gate, a wishing well, and an aviary.

Palm Groves Garden is part of the estate owned by the prominent Bermudan Gibbons family. It’s easy to reach independently, and you can spend a pleasant hour (or longer) in this tranquil spot, wandering manicured lawns, flowering trees, and palms. For a hassle-free option, visit Palm Groves Garden as part of an island day trip with a private guide—some tours add nearby sites such as the Bermuda Botanical Gardens or the Arboretum to the itinerary.

  • Bird lovers and kids will like the small aviary home to exotic parrots and cockatoos.

  • The garden is part of a private residence, so don’t expect public amenities such as restrooms or signage.

  • Some visitors like to take picnics to Palm Groves Garden. Just be sure to take your trash away after.

  • There are some seats at the top of the Carrot Hill section of the garden to rest your legs and admire the views.

Palm Groves Garden is in Devonshire Parish, off South Road, opposite Brighton Hill Road. By public transport, take the number 1 bus route between Hamilton and St. George, and ask the driver when to get off. You should be able to disembark right outside the site.

The gardens are open to the public year-round, from Monday through Thursday during normal working hours. Set in the quiet Devonshire Parish, well away from the towns of Hamilton and St. George, the gardens are off the main tourist track so rarely feel busy whenever you visit.

If gardens are your thing, you might also want to visit the nearby Bermuda Botanical Gardens in Paget Parish. Just a little further along the South Road in the direction west toward Hamilton, this public park offers the chance to see more of the island’s varied flora, along with amenities such as a visitor center for information, snacks, and restrooms.
